Material Languages

Constructed Paintings

Material Languages is a body of constructed paintings bringing resin, metal, wood, image and other materials into relationship. Each material carries its own visual language — its own structure, rhythm, surface and possibilities — while their combination creates a shared composition.

The project extends a visual language that has been present in my practice for many years. Earlier acrylic paintings on canvas were built through sharply defined abstract forms, controlled line and fields of colour. The constructed paintings carry this vocabulary into physical space: line becomes metal, colour becomes material, and the painted surface develops depth, texture and objecthood.

The works develop through making: line establishes boundaries, colour occupies and connects spaces, and contrasting materials move between precision, texture and surface. Individual series may begin with wood, photography, found material or a particular subject, allowing the language of the work to change while retaining a common method of construction.

The project continues to develop across different scales, surfaces and combinations of materials.

Framing forms an integral part of each completed work. The frames are conceived and made by the artist in response to the individual piece, bringing the constructed panel, surrounding space and frame into a single resolved object. Each work is therefore presented as a complete composition in which the frame belongs to the artwork as a whole.
